For the first time this summer, cows from the neighbouring farm are grazing in the flower meadow. Eddie is delighted to see them, and hops over to say hello: he’s been waiting for them for a long, long time, and they’re here at last! They tell such wonderful stories about their life on the farm, about the adventures they’ve had in the stables, and about all of the animals who live there. “Hello cows, I missed you!” Eddie shouts as he jumps close to one cows’ ear. “There you are, little hopper,” moos the cow softly. And then she starts to talk. “You know, Eddie, we’re a bit later than usual in coming here this year. The farmer has had so much on his mind. New pigs and chickens have come to live on the farm, and it’s been a lot of work.” Oh, how Eddie would love to see these strange animals. “I don’t even know what a pig looks like!” he says into the cow’s ear. “What colour is its fur?” Laughing merrily, the cow tells Eddie that he should just stay on her shoulder and come to the barn with her later, and she’ll give him a ride back to the flower meadow the next morning. Eddie’s heart leaps with delight to hear this wonderful idea! “Wow! Yes, let’s do that,” he says.
When they get to the barn, Eddie rubs his eyes in amazement. He’s heard about fleecy sheep before, but he’s never seen them up close. How snuggly they are! And look! There are the chickens and geese! All the cackling and honking is making Eddie feel quite dizzy! And he has to be very careful, the cow tells him—grasshoppers are at the top of their menu! A little scared, but still excited, Eddie looks around a little more and sees—the pigs! They don’t have any fur!” he calls out to the cow. He loves the cute little pink piglets. And then he meets the rabbits, who are very friendly and nice to him. Eddie already knows all of the swallows nesting under the roof from the meadow, but he’s never seen the dog and the cat before. There are so many beautiful animals, all together on one farm that Eddie can hardly believe it! It never gets boring here, does it? He asks his gentle friend, who shakes her head in agreement as she chews happily on the cud.
